silvia pereira hair artist from toledo

silvia pereira stylist from toledo

today silvia our girl from toledo answered some questions :

How long are you working in the salon by now?
I’ve been living in Lisbon and working at Hairport for almost 7 years.

How comes that you are still here - isn’t it boring?

Well, on one side it is very tempting to move to some place else and start all over, but on the other side it’s also interesting to have a routine and to know how to deal with that. As long as I continue to have the liberty and support to explore other interests it will be a pleasure working here.

What would you really like to try out one day (but your client’s or you are too afraid)?

Something that I have never dared to do on a customer nor on me, but I just love it: a bob cut with everything clipped until above the ears. Does somebody dare to do this?

where would you like to work (at least for a while)

In Mexico City or in New York.

What do you think about fashion magazine cover page girls?

I think that this type of magazine is for the H&M or Zara generation that tends to democratize fashion because everybody has access to it and all the girls from Beja to Tokyo seem to dress, walk and have the same attitude.
These magazines are stereotyping teenagers more and more.

Why do you like Alex de la Iglesia movies?
I just love this Spanish director because he is dynamic, brutal, fun and he knows how to choose the soundtracks. He’s the Spanish Tarantino and recommend the film “Perdita Durango” starring Javier Barden and Rosie Perez.

What kind of music do you like these days?
Definitely Colombian Cumbia

springtime at hairport

February 22nd, 2009

since the sun is out for more than a week now and the temperatures are rising we decided it’s springtime in lisbon. one afternoon was mostly dedicated to restyle ourselfs and get some color in our hair - it was fun obviously!

exchanging ideas and experiment on each others hair brings a lot of feedback into our everyday live. the comments of the people on the street, of our clients, our friends and our families fuel our creativity. the teamwork and the teamspirit is the most important thing within the wip-hairport salon.

in general one can say the work and the colleagues are quite boring and narrow minded! :D

How long are you working in hairport?
I started working here one year ago. I had already worked here for 3 years but I’ve stopped for two years to finish my hairdressers degree and gain some experience in other salons. after that I came back like in the popular portuguese saying “o bom filho a casa retorna” (a good child always returns).

How come you are still here - isn’t it boring?
I think it’s like an enchantment: when you’re enchanted you just can’t leave. I think the general mood here is cheerful and you can find a relaxed atmosphere and highest professionalism at the same time. What’s kept me here for such a long time is that one simply can’t get bored here. We have unique clients who have the need and the guts to come to us to change their looks and this is really hard to find somewhere else. I really like our unusual, relaxed, funny and usually very open minded customers were you meet strong individuals who are interesting, relaxed, amusing, sincere and generally very open minded.

What would you really like to try out one day?
well… so many ideas are popping into my head right now that i find it hard to decide which one to choose. What I would really like to do is a design inspired on a painting of miró :)

Where would you like to work, at least for a while?
I would like to work in Berlin. I think it’s a great city, and I’m already learning german. I really need to go, to live the experience of living in a foreign country… but I’ll always want to come back. Like I said before its like an enchantment…

What group of people is most inspiring for you?
I do not have a favorite style. I love my customers, they are all special. I do not really identify myself with a special style, but I sympathize with rockabilly and gothic. However, I also like the desperate housewives and the effect that some layers or strong fringes can have on them… what I really love is to give my customers some power and self-confidence so that they like themselves more than ever and leave the salon happy and satisfied. Seeing my customers happy makes me happy.

You are somehow a “country girl” from Alentejo. Can you imagine yourself going back to a village in Alentejo someday?
An interesting question… I guess it would be difficult to go back. I just love to spend holidays and rest in Alentejo. It is very complicated to live there you can’t find work. I guess i will stay close to alentejo, probably move to the Algarve one day where you have not only a high standard of living but also a fantastic seacoast, beach and sun.

Would you like to become the Prime Minister of Portugal one day? What would be your first political agenda that you would like to realise?
This question is really difficult. Well, if I’d become Prime Minister, I’d like to raise the ridiculous pensions of the lower classes. I think that everyone has the right to have a quality life at least in the last years of ones live. I’d also forbid mortgage for real estates and lower the rents for apartments to mobilize the portuguese people and to avoid that they stick to one place and one house.

nine years and nine months - quite some time!!!

How are you still here? Isn’t it boring?

actually i´m bored to death - LOL. but my bosses, colleagues and the interesting work make it really difficult to leave :)

pubic hair design :D -  seriously - I usually don’t have problems to find someone who lets me try out some excentric ideas .

where would you like to work (at least for a while)?
I would choose a big city or a mega city outside of europe, like new york, rio de janeiro, sydney, singapore… this would be a  challenge!

What do you think about fashion magazine cover page girls?
I’m note sure if I understand the question, it depends on the magazine and the covergirl. generally boring and artificial puppets, but i have seen some good ones too.

Why do you like james bond movies?
fast cars, cool gadgets invented by Q, strong masculine figure who protects women, actually most of them get killed after the one-night-stand with mr. bond - LOL

last week ulli arrived in lisbon with a suitcase full of gifts. when she started the fortschnitt salon in vienna in 1988  she was a radical cut and colour pioneer. sabine, the current owner of wip-hairport, used to work for ulli in the 90’s and this led to some exchange between the salons. in november 2006 silvia and liane swapped jobs for one month. silvia went to vienna and she loved it. (read her report here). liane joined our team for a few weeks and did a great job not only by cutting hair but also making new friends.

after the gorgeous cut silvia did on ulli’s head, we took a picture of the two of them on elevador da bica. of course they had to explore the lisbon nightlife together and you can hardly find a better guide than silvia!

This is about our charming receptionist Tânia. she’s a very friendly and caring person who always tries to keep the balance in any group. Tânia is a translator in various meanings: not only is she fluent in portuguese, german and english, she also connects people and makes them understand each other.

Her unique outfits and her styling do show another Tânia to the people who don’t know her. Sometimes she really likes to create the image of a fighter.  Even though she practiced martial arts for quite some years, we consider her the most peaceful person ever.

She’s the multilingual voice to our costumers, the favourite model of our stylists and a well known figure in the lisbon nightlife.

Irina the new girl on bord!

Irina our new team member

Irina our new team member

Irina is our new colleague that joined our team recently. She’s from Lisbon and worked in some of the best salons in this area before joining us. From the very beginning she blended into our salon as if she always worked here.

to introduce her a bit we asked her a few questions -

what do you like about working as a hairdresser:
Only a few have the privilege to love their job and luckily I’m one of them. When you can achieve love, passion, audacity, expertise and mastership , all in one, the success is guaranteed!  I’m a very confident professional, I always respect the customer’s ideas and try to exceed their expectations. After quite a few years of work, I still manage to smile when I work and each haircut makes me dream.

what do you want for the future:
A few years ago, I never thought that I’d become a hairdresser. Now I couldn’t imagine being anything else. I want to be happy, that’s for sure. Live one day at a time because one doesn’t know what the future brings.

in the near future we will show some of her work on flickr and in this blog. if you are curious by now you can book a haircut with her ;)

patricia, one of our top assistants has training to improve her cut and color skills two times a month. this time jezz was the instructor to show her how to cut designs that patricia first developed on paper. a lot of things have to be considered, the form of the client’s skull, the distortion of the lines, the direction of the hair grow etc. just when you really have to do it, you realize how hard it is, and lucky patricia to have jezz on her side :)

We do not know how to replace her and we will miss her creativity and particularly her good mood. of course we wish her the best of luck in this new stage of her life… and please Almut, come visit us as soon as you can.

We can’t change the course of life, we have lost one member of our family but won already a new one: our little Emil :)
